Trossachs Trail Refresh Hits the Mark
The Trossachs Trail – Explore on Foot, by Boat, by Bike
Today’s 40-mile road loop was inspired by the popular 19th century Trossachs Tour, a rail, steamship and coach tour to see the romantic scenery made famous by the work of celebrated poets and artists of the day.
Although the name comes originally from the small wooded glen linking Loch Achray and Loch Katrine, the Trossachs has come to describe a large area of woodland and lochs to the east of Ben Lomond, between Callander and Aberfoyle.
The Trossachs Trail features the whole area and includes links to Loch Lomond at Inversnaid and the high mountains of Breadalbane through Strathyre and Balquhidder, with a focus on what you can do on foot and by boat or bike.
It has everything you would expect – lochs, rivers, woodland, spectacular views, pretty villages, excellent accommodation and hospitality, wildlife, hills and mountains. And activity for all tastes, from gentle strolls to full day hikes, open water swimming, paddle boarding, cycling and fishing.
The Friends recently refreshed the brown road signs, installed information panels around the route and in visitor centres, and developed a website and leaflet full of information and inspiration to help plan a visit, part of the wider Trossachs Visitor Management Programme, led by the Friends and Sir Walter Scott Steamship Trust at Loch Katrine and supported by Strathard and Callander Hydro Funds and Scotland Loves Local.
